Abstract
This study attempted to analyze the smoking characteristics of adolescent smokers and to suggest strategies for effective smoking prevention programs by the in-depth understanding of peer influence on smoking. Data were collected through focus group interviews with 21 adolescent smokers in high schools and community adolescent centers. The results found that characteristics of smoking behavior were different depending on their affiliated institutions, and the peer influences affected entire process of adolescents¡¯ smoking experience from first cigarette use to regular smoking. In the first time of smoking, peer group recommended cigarettes to their friends for free during the period of occasional smoking as well. In the period of regular smoking, peer group gave information on how to buy cigarettes without checking ID. Peer influence was the key factor which maintained adolescents¡¯ smoking and smoking behavior was linked to other delinquent behaviors like forgery of ID and theft of tobacco. The friendship network ties of adolescents were shaped by their participation in such problematic behaviors.
In order to prevent smoking among adolescents, it is necessary to develop peer norms for non-smoking within adolescent networks by conducting non-smoking campaigns that encourage active participation of youth. And smoking prevention education should be strengthened to establish adolescents¡¯ positive attitudes towards non-smoking from an early age.
